Pigs Playing Poker

Something I did this eeevening.

Still to add:  The cards, the backs of two more pigs' heads and the background.  Possibly a plush, dingy old fashioned kind of place.

Weekly Update

Time Management/Progress
Got lots done this week, and plan to do more work over the weekend in preparation for the deadline next Thursday.  I've also got my first Uni interview a week today, and have a meeting with a 3rd year on Monday about a brief for illustrations on a teaching pack :-)  Busy busy busy.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths = Got the software I needed on my laptop so I can do work at home now.
Weaknesses = Still need to get a lot done and print stuff.  Need to make a detailed time plan for next week so that I stay on top of everything.

Paul gave us this brief this morning.  Woooo!  Going to do an animation for it methinks.  I wish it wasn't a DORITOS ad though, why couldn't it be an advert for grapes or apples or something?

Voila.  Hometiiiime!  :)  And here's this illustration again by Katy Davis, just 'cos I love it so much.

Here's some of Katy Davis's work.  I love the way she combines photographs and illustration :)  Those wooden characters at the bottom are cuuute.

Here's a music video she did for the band, Bim :-

She graduated from Norwich School of Art and Design with a 2.1, BA (Hons) Graphic Design specialising in Animation.

Another Blog Update

It's been 4 days since I last updated... but I've had a few more ideas since then and I've completed the crossed out things on the following list.

  • Do more sketches of layouts in sketchbook

  • Finish reading Animal Farm

  • Trace linework into Photoshop/Illustrator

  • Colour up artwork in Photoshop/Illustrator

  • Play around with different layouts and colours

  • Create character sheets for the animals (pigs)

  • Polish up illustration work and lines etc.

  • Test different media for textures i.e. photographs and scanned images

  • Create backgrounds to choose from (neutral colours, just white with some shadows, farmyard)

  • I've been playing around with collage techniques.  I'm aiming to create illustrations made up of photographs of men in suits, with heads of pigs stuck on top.  I'm going to try keeping the sellotape in the image by scanning it in so it looks home-made.  Another idea has been to illustrate the pig heads and stick them on photos of suited men... will have to see which looks better.

At the end of Animal Farm Orwell says that it's impossible to tell the pigs and the humans apart, and by mixing their bodies up like that I'm hoping to communicate the concept of pigs and men being the same.

Here's a picture of the Resevoir Dogs cover.  Lots of suited men!  :)

    Weekly Update

    Progress and Time Management
Ho ho ho ho ho.  Same old story!  I'm not very much further on than I was last week... I have some layouts sketched out and I bought a layout pad... however I still need to do some more illustrations in my sketchbook (even if they're rough) and trace the linework into Illustrator or Photoshop.  When my artwork's onto the computer i'll be able to experiment with layouts and colours easily.  *click* print.  *click* print etc etc.

p.s. If anyone has a spare £450 kicking around then feel free to buy my the student edition of CS4... thaaanks.  Oh, and Cinema 4D too! :-)

    Images and Videos

I looked at Amy Dover a bit today (thanks Chris) and really liked her super-realistic illustrations, especially this one of the little bird.

    Strengths & Weaknesses
I say this every week...but my time-management is completely RUBBISH.  I get too easily distracted.  One thing that's really helped has been the time-sheet timetable thing I made for my proposal.  It's really detailed (every day has its own box) so I can see where i'm supposed to be.  I have been ticking stuff off as I do it too, so that's made me feel like i'm actually getting stuff done, rather than going in circles.

Skills Development in Relation to Future Careers
I've been learning all the swishy shortcuts on my Macbook... does that count?

Goals & Aims for the Week
Get up to date on my timetable/time-sheet thing.  This means I need to:-
    • Do more sketches of layouts in sketchbook
    • Finish reading Animal Farm
    • Trace linework into Photoshop/Illustrator
    • Colour up artwork in Photoshop/Illustrator
    • Play around with different layouts and colours
    • Create character sheets for the animals (pigs)
    • Polish up illustration work and lines etc.
    • Test different media for textures i.e. photographs and scanned images
    • Create backgrounds to choose from (neutral colours, just white with some shadows, farmyard)
That's everything i'd like to get done by this Friday (the 19th...but I can do some over the weekend if I absolutely NEED to - would rather sleep lots though.)

Would quite like to visit an exhibition or something this weekend too.  Anyone fancy it?

    Weekly Blog Update

    Strengths & Weaknesses

This week's strengths... I've been alright at getting research all finished off.  Have also made a poster for a gig a friend from work was promoting :)  **see below and click for detail**

Weaknesses include doing only HALF of my proposal and treatment because I didn't notice that i'd completely ignored half of the handout... I also wrote it all wrong and said I me, my, mine all the way through it.  Bah.  Need to re-write that again this week.

Skills development in relation to future careers
I bought a macbook!  I've been learning all the shortcuts and getting to know it this week.  I am in looove.  I suppose making that poster (see above) would count towards skills development too.  I found it tricky deciding where text should go, how big it should be, what colour I should make it, whether or not to make it bold, italicized etc.

Goals and Aims for the Week
    • Re-write my proposal and treatment
    • Buy a layout pad
    • Finish reading Animal Farm
    • Sort out that 3rd year's brief with Jill - decide what we're doing and all that.

    Existing Animal Farm Book-Covers

The first one is actually someone's entry to the same competition.  It popped up on Google Image search :-)  It's nice to be able to check out the competition.

Anyway, I have a laptop again.  Three cheers for technology!

(and I am now officially skint for the next few months forever)
